Wake Forest Wins Second Hoops for Hunger Food Drive

March 7, 2008

For the second consecutive year, Wake Forest has won the Hoops for Hunger Food Drive after donating the most pounds of food per capita among the seven participating North Carolina universities.

Wake students donated $2,829.99 in cash equaling 14,149.95 pounds of food and brought-in 1,036 pounds of food for a total of 15,185.95 pounds collected.

The food and funds collected by Wake Forest will benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina, located in Winston-Salem.

Schools participating in the contest, previously known as the Big Four Food Fight, included North Carolina - Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central, North Carolina State, Duke, East Carolina and North Carolina Wesleyan.

Together, the seven participating schools collected 5,055 pounds of food and $6,506. This is equivalent to 31,651 meals, according to the Food Bank.

Wake Forest collected 2.53 pounds of food per student. North Carolina Wesleyan was second at 1.95 pounds per student and UNC came in third with 0.601 pounds donated per student.

Wake Forest was second in most actual pounds of food donated at 1,036.

"When I found out we won for the second year and more than doubled the amount we raised from last year, I was so proud of all the hard work and extra time the students dedicated to help feed the hungry of Winston Salem," said Wake Forest Student Government Representative Alex Vaccaro.

Vaccaro will accept this year's trophy from Second Harvest Food Bank Executive Director Nan Griswold, a 1970 graduate of Wake Forest, during pregame festivities of the N.C. State men's basketball game on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for noon.

Vacarro organized collections at two basketball games in February as well as a "dorm storm" where trips to residence halls were made to collect money and food donations from Wake Forest students.

N.C. State women's basketball coach Kay Yow is the honorary chairman for the drive.
