Former Deacon Pride Ratteree Passes

Pride Ratteree,90, a former Wake Forest football player and assistant coach, passed away on Sunday, April 14 in Columbia, SC.

Ratteree lettered at guard for Wake Forest from 1943-45. He was a member of Wake Forest's 1945 football team that participated in the inaugural Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla. He helped the 1944 team to an 8-1 record. Ratteree also lettered in basketball in 1944-45.

Ratteree was selected in the 19th round of the 1946 NFL Draft by the Chicago Cardinals.

After graduating with a bachelor of science degree in 1946, Ratteree spent time with the Chicago Cardinals before accepting a position as assistant coach at Staunton Military Academy in Virginia. He became head coach at Staunton in 1948 and served in that capacity until he was appointed line coach at Lenoir Rhyne in the fall of 1949. At Lenoir Rhyne, Ratteree was noted for his strong lines which ranked with the best in the North State Conference. He also served as assistant basketball coach at the Hickory institution. During his career he also coached at Davidson, The Citadel and South Carolina as well as in the World Football League with the Birmingham Vulcans.

As a student at Wake Forest, Ratteree was a member of Kappa Sigma social fraternity, the student council and the Monogram Club.

The Kings Mountain, NC native returned to Wake Forest in 1954 for a two-year stint as the Demon Deacons' line coach.

The funeral service for Coach Ratterree will be held at 10 o'clock, Wednesday, April 17th, at First Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at 2 o'clock in Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain, North Carolina. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock, Tuesday evening at First Presbyterian Church, Jackson Hall. Invited to serve as honorary pallbearers are, past and present Elders of First Presbyterian Church and Coach Ratterree's former players. Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family.
