WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers (NASPAA) has named Jeffrey Griffin, Wake Forest University P.A. Announcer, the 2012-13 Bob Sheppard P.A. Announcer of the Year.

The late Sheppard was the P.A. announcer for the New York Yankees for 57 years, and is considered to have been the best P.A. announcer ever. His professionalism was legendary.

Griffin, representing the category of NCAA P.A. announcers, has announced 13 years at the university level and since 2001 has announced every home football game for Wake Forest University. Alumni and supporters boast that they have the "best announcer anywhere."

"Jeffrey is the consummate professional," said Mike Odom, Wake Forest's Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing. "At Wake Forest, the field hockey and volleyball players receive the same effort and attention as the basketball and football players. Our coaches request Jeffrey to announce their games year after year."

Besides announcing for many men's and women's Wake Forest sports teams, Griffin has also traveled with the school's marching bands for competitions. A native of Winston-Salem, he also provides the voice-overs for the university's marketing efforts.

"It is an honor to be recognized for what has always been a group effort at Wake Forest University," said Griffin. "I have the good fortune to be surrounded by people who make my job simple. We do the best we can do to create the ultimate gameday experience for the students, our fans, Demon Deacons everywhere and the Winston-Salem community. Today, I am especially `Proud to be a Deacon'."

"Bob Sheppard once said that a P.A. announcer is not a cheerleader, or a circus barker or a home town screecher. He's a reporter," commented Brad Rumble, NASPAA Executive Director. "I am confident that if Bob Sheppard were to have heard Jeffrey announce, he would have cast his vote for Jeffrey, too. He truly embodies professionalism and class, which is what Bob Sheppard was all about."

The NASPAA is a professional association for sports public address announcers with a mission to raise the level of professionalism of announcing. The awards program is sponsored by Clell Wade Coaches Directory and Balfour.
