MEN'S SOCCER HEADS TO ORLANDO TO FACE NC STATE IN ACC TOURNAMENT

The Wake Forest men's soccer team kicks off the postseason this week in sunny Florida, competing in the 1997 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Tournament at the Disney Soccer Stadium in Orlando.

Finishing the regular season at 9-9 overall and 2-4 in the ACC, the Demon Deacons drew the No. 6 seed in the tournament and will face third-seeded NC State in the first round on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Should the Deacs win, they would play the winner of the Virginia-North Carolina matchup in the ACC semifinals at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The championship game will be played at 3 p.m. on Sunday and will televised live on the ACC Sports Network (Fox Sports South, Home Team Sports and Sunshine Network).

Wake Forest is coming off a thrilling 2-1 overtime win at No. 13 Clemson on Sunday which helped the Deacs lock up the sixth seed. Senior midfielder Ihor Dotsenko (Kiev, Ukraine) led the Deacs with a goal and an assist on the day, while freshman forward Jaron Barbee (Hinckley, Ohio) scored the game-winner in OT to lift WFU to the win.

Despite their regular-season finish, the Demon Deacons are optimistic about their chances in the ACC tourney. Wake dominated the Wolfpack, who were ranked No. 9 in the nation at the time, by a 4-0 score earlier in the season, and three of the Deacs' four regular-season ACC losses were on close one-goal decisions.

VOLLEYBALL WRAPS UP REGULAR SEASON AT HOME

The Deacs are in the midst of a 10-match losing streak. Wake Forest's last win came on October 8 at home over Davidson. Last week, the Deacons took both UNC Greensboro and North Carolina to five games before finally falling. On the week, Mary Buczek's team was 0-3 as they fell to NC State in three games on Saturday.

Sophomore Katie Horne (Nashua, NH) has tied the Wake Forest record for kills in a season this year with 394. It is a record that Pam Pounds established in 1983 and Horne tied in 1996.

DEACON HARRIERS PREPARE FOR NCAA SOUTHEAST REGION MEET

Both the men's and women's cross country teams are preparing for the 1997 NCAA Southeast Region Meet to be held Saturday at Furman University in Greenville, SC. Both clubs are coming off second place finishes in the ACC Championships held November 3 in Tallahassee, FL. Last season, the Wake Forest men finished second at the Region meet while the women were ninth. The men's top finisher in 1996 was current senior Nolan Swanson (Sherman, NY) who placed fourth, while Kraus was the top women's finisher for the Deacs with a 23rd place finish.
