WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest track and field junior Alva Hicks set an indoor school record in the weight throw to cap the first day of competition at the Camel City Invitational on Friday.

Hicks already held the school record with a mark of 19.43m (63-9) that she set last season at the ACC Championships. On Friday, she threw 20.16m (66-1.75), a mark that was good for second at the competition and currently stands second in the ACC.

The Demon Deacons totaled five top-five finishes in the opening day of competition at the JDL Fast Track, including one event title, three second-place finishes and one fourth-place finish.

Tesia Kempski claimed the lone event title for the Deacs in the pole vault after clearing 3.85m (12-7.5), six inches higher than the second-place competitor. It was her third pole vault title of the season.

Alexandria Florent tied for second in the women’s seeded high jump with a cleared height of 1.70m (5-7) while Darby Deutsch tied for fourth in the pole vault with a height of 3.25m (10-8) to round out the top-five women’s track and field finishes.

Luke Annichiarico led the Demon Deacon men with his second-place finish in the pole vault competition. Annichiarico cleared the 4.40m (14-5.25) bar to match a season-best height and claim the silver.

Also in the field, Jordan Banks tied for 10th in the long jump with a best mark of 5.32m (17-5.5) while Janese Lynch smashed her previous personal best in the weight throw with a mark of 15.08m (49-0.75). She entered tonight’s competition with a personal best of 12.15m (39-10.25).
