Deacs Open Competition at the Music City Challenge

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Demon Deacons recorded three top-five finishes and six top-10 results as Wake Forest men’s and women’s track and field opened weekend competition Friday afternoon at Vanderbilt’s Music City Challenge.

Mitchell Day and Alexandria Florent both finished third in their respective events while the men’s distance medley relay team also took third.

Day closed out Friday’s competition with a third-place finish in the 5000m. The freshman crossed the line at 14:21.76, just six seconds shy of the school record time of 14:15.77 set in 2006.

Florent kicked off the two-day meet with a third-place finish in the high jump. She cleared a height of 1.76m (5-9.25) on her third attempt, passing her previous personal indoor best of 1.75m (5-8.75).

On the track, the men’s DMR team consisting of Angelos Vasileiou, Kaleb Bryant, John Archie and Daniel Viegra finished third with a time of 10:00.40.

The Deacons also had three additional top-10 results.

Jordan Banks recorded personal bests in both of her events on Friday. Banks finished eighth in the long jump with a best mark of 5.68m (18-7.75). She entered tonight’s competition with a longest mark of 5.47m (17-11.25) set earlier this year at the Navy Invitational. In her second event of the night, Banks ran 25.37 in the 200m, surpassing her fastest time of 25.50.

Eliza Lukens-Day finished 10th in the 5000m with a time of 16:33.66. It was her first-ever indoor 5K, with her best outdoor time clocking in at 16:59.27. Mimi Smith also ran in her first-ever indoor 5000m, finishing 17th with a time of 16:55.90.

In the field, Alva Hicks took eighth in the weight throw with a best throw of 19.62m (64-4.50).

The Demon Deacons will wrap competition in Nashville on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. On Saturday afternoon, Robert Heppenstall and Sebastian Fischbach will compete in the Iowa State Classic.
