Deacs Have Strong Showing on Second Day of ACC Championships

CLEMSON, S.C. - Alexandria Florent earned All-ACC honors in the women's high jump and two Demon Deacons qualified for finals in their respective events on the second day of competition at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Florent cleared a career-best indoor height of 1.78m (5-10) to take second in the event and earn a spot on the First Team All-ACC squad. Last season, Florent finished fifth at the conference meet for Second Team All-ACC honors after clearing 1.73m (5-8). Entering tonight, her best indoor height was 1.76m (5-9.25), set earlier this season.

On the track, Sebastian Fischbach qualified for the finals in the men's mile while Robert Heppenstall earned his spot in the men's 800m finals.

Fischbach finished second in his mile heat with a time of 4:05.49 to automatically qualify for a spot in Saturday's finals. In the men's mile, the top two from each of the four heats automatically qualify plus the next two best times. The finals will be held Saturday at approximately 12:45 p.m.

Heppenstall also automatically qualified for the 800m finals after winning his heat with a time of 1:49.55. In the 800m, the top two from each heat plus the next two best times qualify for the eight-man final, held Saturday at 1:50 p.m.

John Archie recorded a career best indoor time of 1:51.90 to finish 10th in the men's 800m and just miss the event finals. Entering tonight's competition, Archie's best indoor 800m time was 1:53.28, recorded at the Music City Challenge earlier this season.

On the women's side, Mimi Smith finished second in her section and 10th overall in the women's 5000m with a time of 16:48.09. Competing in just the second 5000m event of her career, Smith improved her time by over two seconds en route to the top-10 finish. Also in the event, Eliza Lukens-Day took 22nd with a time of 17:18.14 and Cate Allen finished 24th at 17:24.25.

In the men's 5000m, Mitchell Day paced the Deacons with a time of 14:29.82, good for second in his section and 15th overall. Mitchell Dyer took 24th at 14:53.74 and Jack Tiernan wrapped up the event at 27th with a time of 15:15.26.

Also on the track, Cydney Delley finished 27th in the 400m with a time of 57.30 while Sarah Johnson finished 30th at 57.75. Competing in the men's mile alongside Fischbach, Angelos Vasileiou finished 17th in the event with a time of 4:11.65.

In the field, Alva Hicks finished ninth in the women's weight throw with a best mark of 19.10m (62-8), the fifth-best mark of her career.

Tesia Kempski reached a career best with a cleared height of 3.95m (12-11.5) in the women's pole vault, good for 11th. Kempski entered Friday with an indoor best height of 3.90m (12-9.5), set this season at the Wake Forest Invitational. Last season, Kempski placed 19th at the conference meet.

The final day of competition at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships begins at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday with the women's shot put. The event finals on the track will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra beginning at noon.
