COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Wake Forest men’s track and field junior Robert Heppenstall wrapped up the 2017-18 indoor season by placing third in the 800m final at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday.

Heppenstall crossed the line with a season-best time of 1:46.88. It is the second-best indoor time of his career, just behind his school record of 1:46.71 set at last year’s ACC Championships. The third-place finish is also the best of his indoor career, as he finished fifth both his freshman and sophomore year.

The Ontario, Canada native earns All-American honors in the indoor 800m for the third time in his career. Heppenstall has now earned five All-American titles at Wake Forest, three in the indoor 800m and two in the outdoor 800m.

"It was a very good meet for Rob," said head coach John Hayes. "He has now made five out of five NCAA finals which is just tremendous. He is the epitome of what any coach would want in a student-athlete: hard-working, humble and a great guy."

Heppenstall automatically qualified for Saturday’s final after finishing second in his heat and second overall with a time of 1:47.74 in Friday’s prelims. UTEP’s Michael Saruni claimed the title with a time of 1:45.15, which was both a facility record and a meet record.

The Demon Deacons now shift their focus to outdoor track and field and will open the season by hosting the Wake Forest Outdoor Opener on March 24.
