Suffered through an injury-plagued sophomore season, but return last season with a solid junior campaign... finished second in team leader, team comedian and most power after a vote by his teammates... will see time at first base and designated hitter... endured a slow recovery after suffering a torn labrum and undergoing surgery in August 2002, but has worked extremely hard and now strongest player on squad... also has proven to be a solid option behind the plate... coaches and pitchers love his receiving ability... possesses excellent defensive skills... can hit for average and power... redshirted his first year... father, Greg, played baseball at Ithaca College... a communications major... born September 28, 1981 in Lewisburg, Pa.

In 2004:
Played in 44 games while starting 37... hit .269 with three home runs and 22 RBI... went 3-for-4 against Lamar with a run scored... in the home opener against Appalachian State had two hits with two RBI and a run scored... at home versus Liberty was 2-for-3 with an RBI... in the three games against High Point went 3-for-9 with three RBI and four runs scored... hit a two-run homerun versus Indiana State... had two hits on March 20 against Georgia Tech both doubles and had two RBI... hit 3-for-4 against UNC-Asheville with a double and a homerun and two RBI.

In 2003:
Missed the first 25 games of the season while slowly recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder... played in just 17 games and started 10... only able to start in consecutive games on three occasions all season... started in only two ACC games because of the injury... posted a .261 average with one home run and eight RBI... went 2-for-4 against Davidson on April 17 with a home run... was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI against High Point on May 14... the Deacons were 7-3 when Mathias started behind the plate.

In 2002:
Finished with a .297 average with four home run and 30 RBI in shared duty behind the dish... emerged as a catcher with the ability to play every day... played in 34 of 61 games with 31 starting assignments... spent every day of the season batting .300 or better... had two hits in his career debut against New Mexico on February 16... lined three hits in his next outing against Elon on February 21... began his college career 5-for-7 after those two performances... had a pair of home runs in the Florida State series... had a career-high four hits in a game against Maryland on April 19 with a double, home run and four RBI... scored four runs against High Point on April 16... batted .319 against ACC pitching... had eight multi-hit games... started 31 games behind the plate and drove in 30 runs for the season... the Deacons were 24-6-1 when Mathias started behind the plate.
