No. 18 Demon Deacons Down Evansville, 10-5

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Shortstop Chase Voshell homered and drove in three runs to lead No. 18 Wake Forest to a 10-5 victory over Evansville on Saturday afternoon at Hooks Stadium in the 1999 season opener for both teams. The two teams played the final four innings of the game on Saturday after the game was suspended in the sixth inning on Friday afternoon due to inclement weather.

Junior Mike MacDougal (1-0) picked the win for the Demon Deacons after allowing three runs in five innings of work. Sophomore Scott Siemon pitched the final four innings of the game to pick up the save, allowing just one earned run on one hit while striking out five batters. Jeremy Brown (0-1) took the loss for the Purple Aces, allowing eight runs in five innings of work.

The Demon Deacons had 15 hits in the game, including nine for extra bases. Voshell, Corey Slavik and Danny Borrell all hit home runs while the Deacs also accumulated two doubles and four triples. Scott Daeley went 3-for-5 in the game for the Deacons.

Wes Carroll homered for Evansville while Anthony Molina, Vince Serafini and Nick Blessinger all finished the game with two hits each. Wake Forest jumped out to a 8-3 lead after five innings before the game was halted on Friday afternoon. The Purple Aces cut the lead to 8-5 with two runs in the top of the seventh before Wake Forest added two runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth to put the game away. The three-game series will conclude on Sunday with a doubleheader at 12 p.m. at Hooks Stadium.
