Danosky's Blast Delivers Victory over New Orleans

HOUSTON - Ben Danosky hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie and lift Wake Forest to a 6-4 victoy over New Orleans in the first round of the Holiday Inn Medical Center Tournament hosted by Rice University in Houston, Tex. With the victory, Wake Forest improves to 5-0, their best start to a season since 1983, while New Orleans falls to 4-1.

Wake Forest jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after two innings, with Danosky driving in a run in the first and Scott Daeley driving in two runs and Scott Seimon one run in the second inning.

New Orleans picked up one run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Chris Avans and then added two more runs in the seventh inning on a two-out, two-run single by Joe Cordo. The Privateers tied up the game with a RBI-single by Aaron Sapp in the top of the eighth.

The Demon Deacons answered in the bottom of the eighth inning as Stephen Sullivan led off the inning with a bunt single. After a Jon Palmieri strikeout, Danosky hit a deep shot down the right field line for his fourth home run of the season to give Wake Forest the 6-4 lead.

Junior John Hendricks (1-0) picked up the win in relief, tossing 1 1/3 hitless innings to close out the game. Hunter Gomez (0-1) took the loss for New Orleans.

Wake Forest starter Mike MacDougal pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on three hits. He struck out six batters, but had trouble finding the plate throughout the game as he walked nine batters.

Wake Forest continues in the Holiday Inn Medical Center Tournament on Saturday 1 p.m. CST when they face host Rice at Cameron Field. The Deacs conclude the three-game weekend with Northwestern (La.) State on Sunday at 12 p.m. CST.
