Deacs Top Broncos Behind Peluse's Gem

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Behind a gem on the mound from Colin Peluse, Wake Forest claimed the series finale over Santa Clara by a 3-1 margin at Schott Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Peluse tossed 8.0 shutout innings to lead the Demon Deacons (3-5), striking out five and conceding just three hits and two walks.

Rayne Supple earned his second save by pitching the ninth, striking out a pair but allowing a solo homer for the Broncos' (4-3) only run of the game.

Jake Mueller paced the Deacs offensively from the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a walks.

Each of the three batters behind him also had multi-hit games: Patrick Frick went 2-for-3 with a double off the wall and a walk, Johnny Aiello was 2-for-4 with a walk, and Shane Muntz went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

In the third inning, Cole McNamee reached on an error and came around to score from second on a Mueller RBI single into the gap.

Mueller was the one crossing the plate in the fifth inning, scoring on a two-out single by Muntz to push the lead to 2-0.

In the top of the ninth, McNamee walked and advanced to third on another Mueller single, scoring on an error to extend the lead to 3-0 before John Cresto hit a solo shot for the Broncos in the bottom of the inning.

After entering the weekend with nine errors in five games, Wake Forest played error-free baseball over the three games in California.

Wake Forest returns home for eight of the next 10 games, beginning with a midweek matchup against UNCG on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
