Wake Forest Takes Game One of Doubleheader Versus Troy, 8-3
March 1, 2008
Dothan, Ala. - Wake Forest used timely hitting and a strong outing from starter Garrett Bullock to take game one of a doubleheader against Troy in the Screentech Wiregrass Classic in Dothan, Ala., 8-3.
Troy suffered its first loss of the season.
Bullock went six and two-thirds innings, giving up two earned runs on eight hits. He struck out one.
The Trojans (6-1) grabbed an early 1-0 lead on Beau Brooks' single in the bottom half of the first, but the Deacs (3-3) struck back in the top half of the second inning scoring two and taking a 2-1 lead.
Wake never relinquished the lead.
Troy starter Tim Wheeler had control problems in the third. After Fox scored, he walked first baseman Evan Ocheltree then hit consecutive Deacon batters, Dustin Hood and Brett Linnenkohl, to load the bases.
Andy Goff then took a base on balls and Ocheltree was forced in, giving the Deacs a 4-1 lead. Wheeler was chased after four and two-thirds innings.
Linnenkohl tied a Wake Forest single-game record for stolen bases with five. The last Deacon to accomplish that feat was Tommy Gregg in the 1984 season.
Phil Negus pitched two and one-thirds innings of effective relief, allowing no hits and no runs while striking out two.
Centerfielder Ben Terry was 2-for-6 with one RBI and one run scored. Linnenkohl was 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and one run scored.
The Deacs will face Troy in the second game of the doubleheader at 7 p.m. Eastern.
