WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest took advantage of an impressive outing from Griffin Roberts and several big hits in an 8-1 win over UMass Lowell at David F. Couch Ballpark on Friday evening.

Roberts set new career-highs with 8.0 innings pitched and 11 strikeouts, allowing just one run on two hits and three walks as he earned the win to improve to 2-1.

Johnny Aiello and Jake Mueller led the Demon Deacons' (4-6) offensive attack with three hits apiece. Aiello blasted his first home run of the season, while Mueller added a double and scored four runs.

Eight of the nine Deacs in the lineup drew walks as Wake Forest earned 10 total free passes.

Aiello cut through a 25 mph left-to-right wind with a three-run blast in the bottom of the first inning to put the Deacs ahead of the River Hawks (2-6).

Christian Long added an RBI single in the third inning to extend the lead to 4-0.

UMass Lowell got its first baserunner, hit and run in the fifth inning. Michael Young drew a leadoff walk and Austin Young followed with an infield single to break up the no-hit bid. Nick Barry hit an RBI fielder's choice for the only River Hawk run.

Mueller doubled and came around to score in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 5-1, and the Deacs added three more in the eighth on a two-run Shane Muntz single and a sacrifice fly by Long.

Antonio Menendez pitched a hitless ninth inning to seal the Deacons' victory.

Game two of the series is set for 4 p.m. on Saturday. It is also the pink game, as the Deacs will be raising awareness and money to fight breast cancer. Fans who wear pink will receive free admission.
