Baseball Downs No. 11 Duke

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Wake Forest jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two and a half innings and held on for a 6-4 victory over 11th ranked Duke in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both schools on Friday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field in Durham, NC. With the victory, Wake Forest improved to 12-3 overall and 1-0 in the ACC while Duke fell to 18-2 and 0-1 in conference play.

Sophomore Mike MacDougal (2-0) started and picked up his second win of the season, allowing four runs on five hits in six innings of work. MacDougal struggled with his control, walking seven batters, but also struck out seven hitters on the afternoon.

Junior John Hendricks pitched three perfect innings in relief to earn his first save of the season. Spanning his last three appearances, Hendricks has now retired the last 26 batters he has faced. Will Rikard put the Deacs on the scoreboard in the top of the second with a two-run home run, his fifth of the season. Wake Forest added two more runs in the top of the third on a two-run single by Danny Borrell. Duke answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third when Jeff Becker plated two runners with a single to right field. The Deacs added a single run in the top of the sixth on a Blue Devil error, but Duke answered with a two-RBI single by Michael Fletcher to cut the Wake Forest lead to 5-4.

Wake Forest pushed the score to 6-4 on a RBI double by Jon Palmieri in the seventh and from there it was all Hendricks in relief as he shut down the Duke offense.

Wake Forest and Duke will continue the three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. and on Sunday at 1 p.m.
