No. 25 Baseball Downs UNC Greensboro, 4-3
Aquilante's ninth-inning homer seals Demon Deacons' win.
March 10, 1999
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -Second baseman Jason Aquilante's solo home run
in the bottom of the ninth inning gave 25th-ranked Wake Forest a 4-3
victory over visiting UNC Greensboro on Wednesday afternoon at Hooks
Stadium.
With the victory, Wake Forest improves its record to 10-4 on the
season, while UNC Greensboro drops to 8-7.
John Hendricks (3-2) picked up the victory in relief for the Demon
Deacons, tossing 2.2 shutout innings and allowing just one base hit to
close out the game. With a runner on third and only one out in the top of
the ninth inning, he worked out of a critical jam by getting a strikeout
and a groundout to keep the score tied at 3-3 and give Wake Forest a chance
to win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Aquilante's solo blast, his first of the season, broke the tie and
gave the Deacons the 4-3 win in the bottom of the ninth inning. He finished
the afternoon with three hits in four at bats.
The Demon Deacons took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Andrew
Riepe singled and eventually scored on a RBI single from Carlos Brackley.
The Spartans came back to take a 2-1 lead in the third inning with a
two-run single from Steve Mokan. Mokan finished the game a perfect 3-for-3
with two RBI.
Wake Forest tied the score at 2-2 in the fourth when Ben Danosky
doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Riepe. The Spartans again
took a one-run lead in the top of the seventh with a solo home run from
Mark Oetjen, but the Deacs promptly tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of
that frame when Ricky Mendez doubled to drive in Scott Daeley.
Aaron Horne (1-1) took the loss for the Spartans, allowing one run
in 0.2 innings of work.
Wake Forest will return to action this weekend when the Demon
Deacons host Duke in a three-game series beginning on Friday afternoon at 3
p.m. at Hooks Stadium.
