WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Senior lefthander John Hendricks tossed eight
shutout innings and the Wake Forest offense pounded out a season-high 19
hits as the 25th-ranked Demon Deacons defeated Duke, 15-6, on Saturday
afternoon at Hooks Stadium.
With the victory, Wake Forest improves its record to 12-4 overall
and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Duke drops to 10-11 and 0-2
in league play.
Hendricks (4-2) surrendered just six base hits -- five of which
were singles -- and one walk while striking out seven batters. He allowed
just two Duke batters to advance past first base.
Duke starter Stephen Cowie (5-2) took the loss after giving up 11
runs on 12 hits in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Already leading by a score of 4-0, the Demon Deacons scored seven
runs and sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning to
put the game out of reach.
Wake Forest's Ben Danosky went 4-for-5 with four RBI in the game
while Scott Daeley also collected four base hits. Danosky, Chase Voshell
and Jason Aquilante all hit home runs for the Demon Deacons. Nine different
Wake Forest batters had at least one hit in the game.
Duke finally scratched the scoreboard with six runs in the top of
the ninth inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Ryan Caradonna.
Wake Forest and Duke will conclude their three-game series on
Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Hooks Stadium.
