No. 23 Wake Forest Downs East Tennessee State, 17-9

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - First baseman Jon Palmieri went 4-for-5 with
four RBI and the Wake Forest offense pounded out 19 base hits as the
23rd-ranked Demon Deacons defeated East Tennessee State, 17-9, on Tuesday
afternoon at Hooks Stadium.
With the victory, Wake Forest improves its record to 13-4 overall
while ETSU drops to 5-8.
The Demon Deacons' Eric Schmitt (2-0) picked up the victory despite
allowing six earned runs in 5 2/3 innings of work. He tied his career high
by registering 10 strikeouts. Matt Briggs was credited with his first save
of the season after tossing 3 1/3 scoreless innings to close out the game.
ETSU's Reid Casey (0-1) took the loss after surrendering 10 runs in
2.1 innings of work.
The Buccaneers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the
first inning when they sent nine batters to the plate, but the Deacs
answered back with four runs in their half of the first to tie the score at
4-4. Wake Forest added five runs in the third inning and seven more runs in
the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.
The Deacons' Ben Danosky and Jason Aquilante each went 3-for-5 with
three RBI as nine different Wake Forest players had at least one hit in the
game. ETSU's Rusty Swakhamer went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI for
the Bucs.
Wake Forest and ETSU will conclude their two-game series on
Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Hooks Stadium.
