No. 23 Baseball Falls to No. 3 North Carolina, 11-1

March 20, 1999

Chapel Hill, NC - Tyrell Godwin went 3-for-5 with three RBI and Mike Bynum pitched 7 1/3 strong innings to lead third-ranked North Carolina to a 11-1 victory over No. 23 Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, NC.

With the victory, North Carolina improved to 19-2 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while Wake Forest dropped to 15-5 and 3-1 in ACC play. The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Demon Deacons.

Bynum (5-0) picked up the win for the Tar Heels after allowing one run on five hits while issuing two walks and striking out six batters. John Hendricks (4-3) took the loss for the Demon Deacons after allowing nine runs in 6 2/3 innings of work.

The Demon Deacons drew first blood in the top of the second inning when Andrew Riepe delivered a solo home run to right field, his third of the year, to give Wake Forest a 1-0 lead. The Tar Heels battled back to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when Chris LaMarsh led off the inning with a solo home run and Tyrell Godwin singled and scored on a RBI groundout from Ryan Mathews.

North Carolina stretched the lead to 6-1 with four runs in the fifth inning. Ryan Earey belted a two-run double and Godwin delivered a two-run single to do the damage for the Tar Heels in that frame.

Wake Forest's best chance to get back in to the game came in the top of the seventh inning when the Demon Deacons loaded the bases with just one out with singles from Riepe, John Kubachka and Corey Slavik, but Bynum induced a double play ground ball from Ricky Mendez to work out of the jam.

The Tar Heels put the game out of reach with three more runs in the seventh inning when Matt McCay blasted a two-run homer and Godwin had an RBI triple. McCay, Earey, Dan Moylan, and Clay Hooper each had two hits in the game for UNC and eight different Tar Heels had at least one hit in the game. Riepe was the lone Demon Deacon player to have two hits in the game.

Wake Forest and North Carolina will conclude the three game series on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
