March 24, 2004
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- UNC-Greensboro's Scooter Michael threw a complete game shutout, leading the Spartans past Wake Forest, 3-0 Wednesday afternoon at Hooks Stadium. The Demon Deacons have now lost three straight games and fall to 11-11 on the season while the Spartans improve to 17-4.
Michael threw his first complete game of the season, allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out seven Deacon batters and improving to 5-0. Wake Forest pitchers Danny Mackey, Sean Souders and Charlie Mellies scattered just six hits and struck out ten batters in the losing effort.
The Spartans got all the runs they would need in the top of the fourth inning. Justin Crist hit a one-out double off Deacon starter Danny Mackey and the next batter, Ryan Brincat drove him in with a single to left-centerfied.
UNC-Greensboro added an insurance run in the top of the eighth. Second baseman Jeremy Roulin led off the inning with a single off Wake Forest reliever Charlie Mellies. After a single by Ryan Gordon, sacrifice bunt by Crist and walk to Brincat, the bases were loaded for shorstop Danny Valencia who lined a sacrifice fly into center field, scoring the Spartans' second run.
The Demon Deacons head to Clemson this weekend for a three-game ACC series against the Tigers.
