TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Jeremiah Klosterman went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead No. 1 Florida State over 19th-ranked Wake Forest, 7-4, on Friday night at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla.
With the victory, Florida State improved to 31-3 overall and 10-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play while Wake Forest dropped to 19-8 overall and 6-3 in league action.
Chris Chavez (3-2) picked up the win relief of starter Jon McDonald who left the game after allowing three runs in 3 1/3 innings. Chavez pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out seven batters. Mike DiBlasi picked up his sixth save of the season after tossing a scoreless ninth inning to close out the game.
Wake Forest starter Mike MacDougal (6-2) took the loss after allowing five runs on 12 hits - 11 of which were singles - in six innings of work. He walked five batters and recorded six strikeouts.
The Seminoles jumped on the scoreboard first, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning after the first six batters all reached base. Matt Diaz and Jeremiah Klosterman each drove in runs with singles while Sam Scott plated a run with a walk.
Wake Forest battled back to tie the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth. The Demon Deacons loaded the bases with no outs when Jason Aquilante walked, Jon Palmieri singled and Ben Danosky walked. A walk from Andrew Riepe plated the first run of the inning and Corey Slavik drove in two runs with a double to center field.
Florida State regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Diaz doubled and came around to score on a RBI single from Klosterman while Scott walked and eventually scored on a RBI single from Kevin Cash.
Wake Forest cut the lead to 5-4 with a solo home run from Corey Slavik, his third of the season, to lead off the seventh inning. However, a solo home run from Bret Groves in the bottom of seventh pushed the Seminole lead back to two runs. The Seminoles pushed the lead to 7-4 with a RBI single from John Halliday later in that inning. Diaz and Halliday each went 3-for-5 with a RBI for the Seminoles. Slavik finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest and Florida State will continue the three-game series on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
