BLACKSBURG, Va - Andrew Riepe went 4-for-5 with two doubles and scored
three runs to lead Wake Forest past Virginia Tech, 8-4, on Tuesday afternoon
at English Field.
With the victory, Wake Forest improved its record to 20-10 on the season
while Virginia Tech dropped to 16-11.
Wake Forest starter Scott Siemon (6-1) picked up the victory after allowing
three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings of work. He allowed seven hits and one
walk while fanning four batters. Danny Borrell earned his first save of the
season after tossing 2 1/3 shutout and hitless innings to close out the game.
Virginia Tech's Brendan McCullers (1-1) took the loss, allowing five runs
on seven hits in three innings of work.
The Demon Deacons took a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a pair of RBI
singles from Stephen Sullivan and Scott Daeley. Wake Forest stretched the
lead to 5-0 with three more runs in the third inning as Sullivan and Riepe
each drove in runs with RBI doubles and Corey Slavik plated a run with a RBI
groundout. Sullivan finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and Borrell
and Daeley each had two hits in the game for Wake Forest.
Virginia Tech cut the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third inning with a
RBI single from Eric Shiflett, while a RBI double from Shiflett in the fifth
inning made the score 5-2. Shiflett finished the afternoon with two hits in
three at bats.
In the sixth inning, Jason Aquilante singled and eventually scored on a
sacrifice fly from Jon Palmieri to push Wake Forest's lead to 6-2. Virginia
Tech mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning when John West
and Kevin Bice led off the inning with back to back singles. A sacrifice fly
>from Randy Martin drove in West and a RBI groundout from Austin Rappe plated
Bice to make the score 6-4 before Borrell came in to shut down the rally.
The Demon Deacons added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth
inning on a two-run triple from Slavik to make the score 8-4. Slavik
finished 2-for-4 with three RBI in the contest.
Wake Forest will return to action when the Demon Deacons host Appalachian
State on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
