Baseball Downs Appalachian State, 7-6
Hendricks picks up first save of season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Third baseman Corey Slavik went 3-for-3 with a
home run and first baseman Jon Palmieri drove in three runs as Wake Forest
defeated Appalachian State, 7-6, on Wednesday afternoon at Hooks Stadium.
With the victory, Wake Forest's record now stands at 21-10 on the
season while ASU drops to 8-24.
Wake Forest starter Matt Briggs (2-0) picked up the victory after
allowing three runs in five innings of work. He issued one walk and fanned
four batters. John Hendricks earned his first save of the season after
tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings to close out the game.
Appalachian State starter Jason Howell (1-7) suffered the loss,
surrendering seven runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.
The Demon Deacons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the
first inning with a two-run double from Palmieri and a RBI double from
Slavik. Wake Forest stretched the lead to 4-0 in the third inning when
Andrew Riepe singled and came around to score on a RBI single from Matt
Price.
The Mountaineers battled back to cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth
inning. Mike Lee and Robbie Huffstettker led off the inning with a
back-to-back singles and Wes Timmons walked to load the bases with no outs.
Shane Sigmon plated two runs with a double and John Anderson drove in the
third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. Sigmon finished the game
3-for-5 with four RBI.
Wake Forest scored three runs in the sixth inning to push the lead
to four runs at 7-3. Slavik led off the frame with a solo home runs, his
fourth of the season, and Danny Borrell and Palmieri each plated runs with
RBI singles. Borrell went 3-for-4 in the game while Palmieri had two hits
in five at bats.
ASU mounted a comeback with three more runs in the eighth inning to
make the score 7-6 when Sigmon blasted a three-run double to center field.
However, Hendricks came on to stop the rally and preserve the Demon
Deacons' victory.
Wake Forest will return to action on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
when the Demon Deacons open a three-game ACC series against Virginia.
