WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Right-hander Mike MacDougal tossed a complete
game and Chase Voshell went 4-for-4 with two RBI as Wake Forest defeated
Virginia, 11-2, on Friday afternoon at Hooks Stadium.
With the victory, Wake Forest's record improves to 22-10 overall
and 7-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while Virginia drops to 15-21 and
5-7 in league play.
MacDougal (7-2) picked up the victory with his second complete game
of the season while recording a career-high 11 strikeouts. He allowed just
one earned run on four hits and four walks.
Virginia starter Greg Withelder (3-6) took the loss after
surrendering nine runs in 2 1/3 innings of work.
The Demon Deacons jumped on the board early and often, scoring nine
runs in the first three innings of the game. Andrew Riepe blasted a
three-run homer in the first inning, his fifth of the season, while Scott
Daeley pushed the lead to 5-0 with a two-run single in the second. Ben
Danosky hit a two-run homer to center field, his seventh of the season, and
Voshell hit a two run blast, his fifth, to give Wake Forest a 9-0 lead
after three innings.
Virginia scored an unearned run in the sixth with a RBI single from
Julian Gonzales while a solo home run from Hunter Wyant gave the Cavs their
second run of the game. Wyant finished 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Wake Forest added a run in the eighth on a RBI single from Daeley
and another in the ninth on a RBI double from Danny Borrell to make the
score 11-2.
Seven of nine Wake Forest starters had at least one hit in the
game, including two hits apiece from Daeley, Borrell and Jon Palmieri.
Daeley and Riepe each had three RBI in the game.
Wake Forest and Virginia will continue the three-game series on
Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
