Baseball Outslugs Appalachian, 16-10

BOONE, N.C. - Wake Forest defeated Appalachian State, 16-10, in college baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Red Lackey Field in Boone. The win moves the Deacons to 25-10 overall, while the Mountaineers fall to 9-27.

Wake Forest jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and eventually built the lead to 9-0, before ASU scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Mountaineers cut the lead to 10-8 in the seventh inning before WFU scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to break open the game. The Deacons scored in every inning except the seventh.

Andrew Riepe led the Demon Deacons, going 4-for-5 with four RBI, two doubles and a homerun. Corey Slavik also drove in four runs for the Deacs and Danny Borrell added a homerun. Scott Seiman goes to 8-1 on the season, pitching the first six innings for Wake. WFU had seven extra-base hits in the game.

Nick Baughn led the Mountaineers offensively with a career-high four hits. Chris Behne and Robbie Huffstetler each drove in two runs for ASU. Jason Howell falls to 2-8 on the season, allowing nine runs in five innings of work. Appalachian outhit the Demon Deacons, 14-13. This is 10th time in the last 13 games that Appalachian has registered more than 10 hits in a game.

Appalachian returns to action this weekend, as they travel to Western Carolina for a conference series. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at noon and a single game on Sunday at 1:00 pm. The Mountaineers return home next Tuesday, as they host Elon at 3:00 pm. That is the start of a six-game-in-seven-days homestand.
