Demon Deacons Edge UNC Greensboro, 6-4

April 15, 1999

GREENSBORO, NC -- John Hendricks tossed a complete game to become Wake Forest's career victory leader and lead the Demon Deacons past UNC Greensboro, 6-4, on Wednesday evening at UNCG Baseball Stadium.

With the Demon Deacons' seventh consecutive victory, Wake Forest improves its record to 26-10 on the season. UNC Greensboro falls to 21-15.

Hendricks (6-4) picked up the victory with his second complete game of the season and 15th of his career after allowing four runs on seven hits while recording four strikeouts. The win was the 30th of his career, moving him into sole possession of first place on Wake Forest's all-time victory list. He became just the 11th pitcher in Atlantic Coast Conference history to reach that milestone.

UNCG starter Corey McDonald (0-4) took the loss after surrendering three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.

The Demon Deacons got on the scorebaord first with two runs in the top of the second inning. After John Kubachka delivered a one out single, Matt Price blasted a triple to center field. Chase Voshell followed with a double to left field to give the Deacs a 2-0 lead. Wake Forest pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning when Jason Aquilante walked and came around to score on a RBI triple from Danny Borrell.

The Spartans mounted a comeback in the sixth inning when they loaded the bases via a single and two walks. Hendricks worked out of the jam when he induced a double play ball from McDonald that plated Brandon Weber, and then forced a fly ball to get out of the inning without any further damage.

UNCG cut the lead to 3-2 with a two-out rally in the seventh inning when Austin Grissom singled and came around to score on a RBI double from Rick Capretta.

The Demon Deacons put the game away with three runs in the top of the ninth inning. After Voshell and Aquilante each delivered singles, Jon Palmieri belted a three-run homer to left field, his 11th blast of the season.

Wake Forest will return to action when the Demon Deacons visit Georgia Tech to open a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series on Friday at 7 p.m.
