Wake Baseball Defeats Winthrop, 4-3

FORT MILL, SC - Junior John Hendricks tossed a complete game while Danny Borrell and Andrew Riepe both homered to lead Wake Forest to a 4-3 victory over Winthrop on Wednesday night at Knights Castle in Fort Mill, SC. With the victory, Wake Forest improves its record to 26-16 while Winthrop falls to 29-14.

Hendricks (9-2) allowed three runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out six batters. He needed just 101 pitches to pick up his fourth consecutive complete game victory.

Winthrop jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning as the Eagles strung together three hits and a walk to score three runs. Darryl Craig led off the inning with a triple and scored on Joe Colameco's RBI single. After Rick Kobik walked, Colameco scored on Brett Busha's RBI single with one out. Kobik came around to score on a groundout by Jason Tarasuk to cap the scoring in the inning.

Wake Forest came back to tie the game in the fourth inning, scoring three runs all after two outs. Jon Palmieri, who extended his current hitting streak to 12 games, singled and Corey Slavik followed with a single to right field. Borrell then hit a three-run homer, his fourth of the season, to tie the score at 3-3. Borrell finished th night 2-for-4 with three RBI. Riepe led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run to left field to give the Demon Deacons the 4-3 lead which would last for the final four innings. Winthrop starter David Steffler (10-2) took the loss, allowing four runs in five innings of work.

The Demon Deacons will host Maryland in a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. at Hooks Stadium.
