Baseball Defeats Applachian State

HICKORY, N.C. - Sophomore Eric Schmitt pitched eight strong innings and Jon Palmieri went 2-for-4 with a home run to lead Wake Forest to a 7-3 victory over Appalachian State on Wednesday night at L.P. Frans Stadium in Hickory, NC. With the victory, Wake Forest improves its record to 30-17 and has now reached the 30-win mark in 10 of the last 11 seasons. Appalachian State falls to 13-25 on the year.

Schmitt (6-1) held the Mountaineer bats in check throughout the game, allowing only one earned run on five hits and one walk while striking out a career high 10 batters. The eight inning effort marked the longest outing of his career. Reliever Jeremy Ward struck out the side in the ninth inning for the Demon Deacons.

Ryan Kelly (0-3) took the loss for Appalachian State, allowing four runs in five innings of work.

The Demon Deacons jumped on the board in the top of the first inning with two runs. Jon Palmieri hit a two dout single and advanced to third on Corey Slavik,s double to right field. A balk scored Palmieri and Slavik came around on Sunny Chiou,s RBI double. The Deacs scored an unearned run in the second and Palmieri hit a solo home run, his ninth of the season, in the third to give Wake Forest a 4-0 lead.

After scoring one run in the fourth, Appalachian State cut the lead to 4-3 with two unearned runs in the fifth. The Deacs responded with a run in the seventh to push the lead to 5-3 and freshman Carlos Brackley delivered a two-out, two RBI single in the eighth to give the Deacs a 7-3 lead. The Demon Deacons will return to action on Thursday when they host Liberty at 2:30 p.m. at Hooks Stadium.
