No. 16 Baseball Rallies Past NC State, 13-9

April 23, 1999

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman outfielder John Kubachka went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI and Mike MacDougal tossed seven innings to pick up his ninth victory of the season as 16th-ranked Wake Forest defeated NC State, 13-9, on Friday afternoon at Hooks Stadium.

With the victory -- the school-record 17th straight at home for the Demon Deacons -- Wake Forest improved its record to 30-12 on the season and 12-6 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, good for second place in the league standings. NC State dropped to 30-17 overall and 7-9 in league action.

MacDougal (9-2) picked up the victory despite not having his best stuff in the game. He surrendered five runs on eight hits and four walks while registering four strikeouts. He also allowed five Wolfpack baserunners to reach base after being hit by pitches. NC State starter Grant Dorn (2-3) took the loss after allowing nine runs on six hits and six walks in five innings of work.

The Wolfpack jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three and a half innings, but Wake Forest rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to knot the score at 4-4. Kubachka capped off the scoring in that frame with a three-run home run, the first of his career.

Wake Forest took a 7-4 lead in the fifth inning with a three-run homer from Danny Borrell, his 11th of the year, and the stretched the lead to 12-4 with five more runs in the fifth inning.

NC State mounted a late rally with one run in the seventh inning, one in the eighth and three more in the ninth to trim the lead to 13-9. The Wolfpack then loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth before Wake Forest's Matt Briggs forced a lazy fly ball from Adrean Acevedo to end the game.

Wake Forest's Jason Aquilante went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI while Matt Price also drove in three runs with two base hits. NC State's Brian Wright went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI while Brian Ward drove in three runs with two hits and Dan Mooney hit his fourth home run of the season for the Wolfpack.

Wake Forest and NC State will continue the three-game series at Hooks Stadium on Saturday and Sunday with first pitch set for 1:30 p.m. each day.
