Baseball Ends 18-Game Home Win Streak

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Second baseman Brian Ward homered twice and drove in four runs to lead NC State past 16th-ranked Wake Forest, 13-7, on Sunday afternoon at Hooks Stadium.

The NC State victory snapped an 18-game home winning streak for Wake Forest and improved the Wolfpack to 31-18 overall and 8-10 in the Atlantic Coast Conference on the season. Wake Forest fell to 31-13 and despite the loss remained in second place in the ACC standings with a 13-7 league mark.

NC State starter Rodney Ormond (5-4) picked up the victory after scattering 11 hits and four walks over seven innings and allowing six earned runs. Wake Forest starter Danny Borrell (0-2) took the loss after surrendering four earned runs in 2 2/3 innings. Borrell was one of five pitchers used by Wake Forest in the game.

The Wolfpack scored early and often, as they put 10 runs on the scoreboard in the first five innings. The Demon Deacons scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning, but never seriously challenged after that point.

Ward opened the scoring with a two run homer in the top of the first inning and then added a solo shot in the fourth, his 13th and 14th long balls of the season. He finished the afternoon 2-for-5 with four RBI and wrapped up the three-game series 10-for-13 with 12 RBI.

Dan Mooney went 3-for-5 for NC State while Matt Postell, Luis Figueroa and Brian Wright had two hits apiece. Borrell had three hits in the game for the Demon Deacons, including his 12th home run of the season, and drove in three runs. Chase Voshell went 3-for-4 for Wake Forest and Jon Palmieri and Matt Price each had two hits in the game.

Wake Forest will return to action when the Demon Deacons visit Davidson on Tuesday at 3 p.m. NC State will open a three-game ACC series at Duke on Thursday at 3 p.m.
