Baseball Completes Sweep of Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Wake Forest pounded out 17 hits and freshman Danny Borrell went 2-for-4 with five RBI as the Demon Deacons completed a three-game sweep of Atlantic Coast Conference rival Virginia, 13-7, on Sunday afternoon at UVA Baseball Field in Charlottesville, VA.

With the victory, Wake Forest improves its record to 34-17 and 13-10 in the ACC while Virginia falls to 26-21-1 and 5-15 in league play. The 13 conference victories ties the school record for ACC wins in a season.

The Demon Deacons jumped out to a 7-0 lead after 2 innings. The Deacs put three runs on the board in the first inning with a two-run home run from Andrew Riepe, his 11th of the year, and a RBI single from Borrell. Borrell delivered a two-run double while Scott Siemon and Sunny Chiou each plated a run in a four-run third inning.

The Cavs rallied for runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to cut the Wake Forest lead to 8-4, but the Demon Deacons scored five runs in the eighth and ninth innings to put the game out of reach. Scott Daeley and Jon Palmieri each had three hits for the Deacs while Riepe finished the afternoon 2-for-5 with three RBI. Chiou and Corey Slavik each went 2-for-4.

Wake Forests Jeremy Ward (8-8) picked up the win in relief for the Deacons, allowing three runs in 4 2/3 innings of work while striking out four batters. Eric Schmitt started, but lasted just 4.1 innings, allowing four runs, and did not figure in the decision. Virginia starter Javier Lopez (5-4) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits in three innings of work.

The Demon Deacons return to action on Tuesday when they host Wingate at 2 p.m. at Hooks Stadium.
