Baseball Pounds Wingate

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--Wake Forest recorded its sixth straight win in the final home game of the season with a 15-2 victory over Wingate University in college baseball action at Hooks Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

With the win Wake Forest improves to 35-17 while Wingate falls to 30-22.

Peter Princi (3-0), starting in his first game of the season, earned the win for Wake Forest. He did not give up a hit to the Bulldogs until the top of the fifth inning with one out. Princi pitched seven innings allowing two runs, four hits, three walks while striking out seven. Rich Drennen (4-4) took the loss for Wingate.

The Demon Deacons scored eight runs in the game's first four innings on the way to an 8-1 lead. The Deacs batted around in the order to post seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Leading the way for Wake was first baseman Jon Palmieri. The ACC's leading hitter went 3-5 with three RBI. Freshman Danny Borrell was 4-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Shortstop Josh Otten belted a three run homer in the bottom of the second inning and finished the game 2-4 with three runs and three RBI. The home run was Otten's first of the year.

Wingate's offense was only able to produce five hits in the game with Mark Feimster collecting two of those. Brock Austin and Brent Nichols were the only Bulldogs that scored on the afternoon.

Wake Forest travels to UNC Charlotte for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 5 p.m. on tomorrow afternoon. That will be the last game for the Deacons until May 9 due to spring exams.
