ZEBULON, N.C. - East Carolina used a five-run fifth inning to break the game open and defeat Wake Forest 9-0 Wednesday evening at Five County Stadium. The Pirates are now 31-17 on the season, while Wake Forest drops to 20-27. Ryan Lloyd continued his hot hitting by going 2-for-3 with a double and a sacrifice bunt. Over his last three starts in right field, Lloyd is now 6-for-10 with three doubles. Matt Conway singled to lead off the second inning, extending his season-high hitting streak to nine games. Conway had a 20-game hitting streak snapped earlier in the year that carried over from his freshman campaign. Wake Forest ended with seven hits on the night, as Pat Blair, Conor Keniry, Mac Williamson and Brett Armour also recorded hits. The Pirates pounded out 16 hits and began the scoring with two runs in the second. After their five runs in the fifth, ECU added another two runs in the eighth inning. Zach Woods earned the win and improved to 2-2 on the year after striking out four and giving up just four hits. Zach White suffered the loss in 3.1 innings of work and dropped to 2-5. With one out in the bottom of the fourth and White on the mound, the power in the stadium went out and the game was delayed for 16 minutes. After the delay, John McLeod came to the mound and pitched an inning of work. The Demon Deacons used nine pitchers on the night. Gabe Feldman, Eli Robins and Jack Fischer all tossed at least one third of an inning without giving up a run. The Deacs will be on the road this weekend when they play Duke in a three-game series Friday through Sunday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
