COLLEGE PARK, Md. - First baseman Jon Palmieri went 3-for-5 and Mike MacDougal tossed seven shutout innings to lead 15th-ranked Wake Forest past Maryland, 9-4, on Saturday night at Shipley Field.

With the victory Wake Forest improved its record to 38-13 on the season and 15-7 in ACC play, while the Demon Deacons' win also clinched second place in the ACC regular season standings behind first-place Florida State. Maryland dropped to 21-30-1 overall and 6-16 in league play.

Wake Forest starter Mike MacDougal (11-2), the ACC's leader in victories, picked up the victory after tossing seven shutout innings. He allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out five batters.

Maryland starter Fred Weaver (1-4) took the loss after surrendering eight runs on 12 hits in 3 2/3 innings of work.

The Demon Deacons took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning when each of the first four batters of the game reached base and came around to score. Jon Palmieri, Andrew Riepe and Matt Price all drove in runs in that inning. A RBI single from Danny Borrell pushed the Deacs' lead to 5-0 in the second inning.

Wake Forest made the score 8-0 with three more runs in the fourth inning. A sacrifice fly from Borrell drove in the first run of the inning, while Price plated a run with a bases-loaded walk and Chase Voshell drove in the third run of the inning with a RBI single. The Deacons made the score 9-0 in the seventh with a RBI single from Borrell. Borrell, who went 2-for-3 in the game, finished with three RBI.

Maryland mounted a rally with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, highlighted by a three-run triple from Eric Beer, to make the score 9-4, but Wake Forest's David Bush came out of the bullpen to put out the fire.

All nine Wake Forest starters had at least one hit in the game, including three hits apiece from Palmieri, Corey Slavik and John Kubachka. Borrell, Voshell and Jason Aquilante each had two hits in the game for the Demon Deacons.

Wake Forest and Maryland will conclude the three-game ACC series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
