Wake Forest Opens Season with 5-1 Win over UNC Wilmington

Box Score Feb. 13, 1998 WILMINGTON, NC -- Junior right fielder Ben Danosky hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs to lead Wake Forest (1-0) to a 5-1 victory over UNC Wilmington (0-1) in the 1998 season opener on Friday afternoon at Brooks Field in Wilmington, NC.

Sophomore right-hander Mike MacDougal (1-0) picked up the win for the Demon Deacons by tossing six strong innings. MacDougal allowed one uneraned run on five hits while striking out nine batters, the second highest strikeout total of his career. Sophomore Eric Schmitt picked up the save after pitching three shutout innings in relief with six strikeouts. On the day, Wake Forest pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts. The Demon Deacons got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when junior center fielder Scott Daeley singled to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He went to third on a groundout by Ricky Mendez, and junior Jon Palmieri drove in the run with a grounder to shortstop. Danosky, who finished the afternoon 2-for-4, hit a two-run homer to right field in the top of the second after senior Will Rikard led off the inning with a double. UNC Wilmington scored in the bottom of the fifth when Mike Regienius scored on a passed ball to cut the lead to 3-1.

Danosky added his second home run of the game in the top of the sixth, driving in Rikard who earlier singled to left field. Rikard finished the day with three hits in four at bats and scored two runs. Bryan Mazur (0-1) started and took the loss for UNC Wilmington, allowing five runs in seven innings of work.

Wake Forest plays Radford on Saturday at 11 a.m. and concludes the three-game weekend against UNC Wilmington on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
