Chiou and Ward Lead Wake Forest over Radford, 9-3

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Senior second baseman Sunny Chiou hit a pair of home runs and drove in three runs and sophomore Jeremy Ward pitched 6 2/3 strong innings to lead Wake Forest (2-0) to a 9-3 victory over Radford (0-1) on Saturday afternoon at Brooks Field in Wilmington, NC. Ward (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits while striking out five batters. Ward induced four double-play ground balls which helped the Deacons escape Radford offensive rallies.

Sophomore Ricky Mendez used his power to put Wake Forest on the scoreboard first with a solo home run, his first of the season, in the top of the third inning. Chiou led off the top of the fifth of with a solo blast to left field to give the Deacs a 2-0 lead. Wake Forest went on to score two more runs in the inning when Josh Otten scored on a Mendez single and Scott Daeley scored on an Andrew Riepe sacrifice fly. After a Ben Danosky double, Chiou hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to push the Wake Forest lead to 6-0. Radford responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth when Chris Whiting hit a two-run home run. Freshman Corey Slavik hit a solo home run in his first collegiate at bat in the eighth inning, and Wake Forest added two runs in the ninth when Daeley and freshman Danny Borrell crossed the plate on a groundout and an error. Borrell, making his colegiate debut, pitched two innings in relief and allowed one run to close out the game.

Radford starter Jamie Booth (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs in four innings of work.

Wake Forest concludes the three-game weekend with a matchup with UNC Wilmington on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
