DURHAM, N.C. – Wake Forest junior Johnny Aiello was named to the Golden Spikes Award watch list by USA Baseball on Friday afternoon.

The preseason watch list features 55 of the nation's top amateur players from high school and all levels of college baseball.

Wake Forest has now had at least one student-athlete on the watch list in four straight seasons, as Aiello joins Will Craig (2015, 2016) and Stuart Fairchild (2017).

A consensus preseason All-American, Aiello was one of the top power bats in the nation a season ago. As a sophomore, he batted .328 with 17 doubles, 20 home runs and 63 RBIs, also stealing four bases.

His 20 homers were 10th-most in the nation and ranked third among all freshmen and sophomores. He also tied for fouth-most in a season in program history.

Aiello is one of nine selections from the ACC, second-most of any conference.

The midseason watch list will be announced on April 10, with semifinalists being selected on May 21, finalists picked on June 6, and the winner announced on June 28.

Wake Forest begins its season in a week, playing host to Georgetown, Navy and Gardner-Webb Feb. 16-18.
