Feb. 23, 2009

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Off to its best start since the 2001 season, the Wake Forest baseball team looks to continue its winning ways on Tuesday, February 24, when it hosts Appalachian State in a midweek tilt. First pitch at Wake Forest Baseball Park is slated for 6 p.m. (ET).

The Demon Deacon offense was the story of the opening weekend. Wake scored 44 runs in the first four games of the season, averaging 11 runs a contest. The 44 runs scored is the most scored in the first four games of a season since the 1986 team plated 47 runs in the opening four games.

Wake Forest hit .378 as a team in the opening weekend and was led by senior outfielder Evan Ocheltree, who was 8-for-15 at the plate with two home runs, five RBIs and nine runs scored. Weldon Woodall is batting .500 on the year with a team-high tying seven RBIs and two runs scored. Dustin Hood (.474), Carlos Lopez (.438) and Austin Stadler (.421) are all hitting above .400 after the first four games of the season.

The Deacs also showed a never say die attitude in the first weekend of the series, recording two wins in the team's last at bat. Wake overcame a 15-7 deficit against Akron on Saturday to record a 16-15 win. On Sunday against Marshall, Wake Forest trailed 6-5 in the bottom of the 10th inning and responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning for the win.

Appalachian State is 3-0 on the season after opening the season with a sweep of Jacksonville State. Jerod Faqqart leads the Mountaineers with a .500 batting average, while David Towarnick and Rand Smith are tied for the team lead with three RBIs.

Wake Forest freshman Daniel Marrs will make his first collegiate start on Tuesday. Marrs made a relief appearance against Akron last weekend and allowed one run on three hits in 2.2 innings. Marrs struck out six and walked one batter in his first appearance of the season. He will be opposed by ASU's Ryan Arrowood, who will be making the first appearance of his collegiate career.

The Demon Deacons lead the all-time series against the Mountaineers 32-12, but ASU won both meetings in 2008.
