Diamond Deacs Down Richmond in NCAA

May 23, 1998

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Wake Forest rallied from behind for the second straight time in NCAA South Regional play here Friday night, overcoming a 4-1 deficit to defeat Richmond, 6-5. The victory, coupled with top-seeded Florida's loss to Baylor earlier in the day, left the Demon Deacons as the only undefeated team of the five schools remaining.

A two-run homer by Will Rikard in the sixth inning, and RBIs from Corey Slavik and Sonny Chiou in the eight put Wake ahead, 5-4. Another insurance run by the Deacons in the top of the ninth proved to be very important, as the Spiders scored once in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Danny Borrell.

Borrell still got the side out in the ninth, though, preserving the win for starter Eric Schmitt, who improved his record to 8-1 with the victory.

Wake now faces the winner of Saturday morning's Florida-Richmond elimination contest. Illinois and Baylor, both with one loss each, met in the afternoon contest.
