List of Deacons In The 2000 Baseball Draft

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Three junior standouts on the Wake Forest baseball team and two high school seniors who signed letters-of-intent to play for the Deacons next spring, were selected today in the first eight rounds of the Major League Baseball Draft.

Rocco Baldelli, an outfielder from Cumberland (R.I.), was the sixth overall pick in the draft, going in the first round to Tampa Bay. Chris Narveson, also a high school senior who has signed with the Deacons, was taken in the second round (53rd overall) by the St. Louis Cardinals. Narveson hails from Arden (N.C.) and played for T.C. Roberson High School.

Three Deacons juniors - left-handed pitcher Danny Borrell, shortstop Chase Voshell and catcher Dan Conway - were also taken high in today's draft. Borrell was a second-round choice (68th overall pick) of the New York Yankees. Voshell went in the third round (83rd pick overall) to the St. Louis Cardinals. Conway was chosen by the Colorado Rockies in the eighth round (227th overall pick).

All five players must now weigh their options on whether to attend (or return) to Wake Forest, or sign a professional contract.

Borrell, a lanky southpaw, went 6-3 in 1999 with a 6.59 earned run average. Also a good hitter and first baseman, Borrell is 38-15 over his three-year career. Voshell batted a lofty .322 last season with 84 hits and 55 RBI. Conway, a remarkably durable catcher who played in all 62 games last spring, finished his junior season with a .318 batting average including a team-best 14 home runs.

Other Deacon players, such as senior pitchers Eric Schmitt and Scott Siemon and outfielder Cory Sullivan are considered possible selections for later in the draft.
