PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Wake Forest men's basketball team outlasted Pitt, 63-57, Wednesday evening at the Petersen Events Center. The Demon Deacons improve to 11-17 on the season with a 4-12 mark in conference play while the Panthers fall to 8-21 and 0-16 in the ACC.
Bryant Crawford recorded his 26th double-figure game of the season and 80th of his career with 14 points to lead all scorers. Crawford also added six rebounds, matching a season high.
Doral Moore recorded 13 points and nine rebounds, just one board shy of his fifth-straight double-double. With his nine rebounds, Moore snapped his double-digit rebound streak, maxing out at 10 consecutive games. That streak stands as the third-longest by a Deacon in ACC play since 1960.
Mitchell Wilbekin chipped in 12 points, his 11th double-figure game of the season while Brandon Childress had nine points, all from the free throw line. He went a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe, setting a career high.
Keyshawn Woods finished with 11 points to bring his career total to 999, just one-point shy 1,000 career points.
After Pitt jumped out to an early 8-4 lead, the Demon Deacons scored back-to-back baskets to tie the game at 8-all. The teams traded baskets until the Panthers used a 6-0 run to take a six-point lead at 10-16 with under 10 minutes to go in the half. The Deacs pulled within one, 18-17, and took their first lead of the game with 5:39 to go in the first half off a pair of free throws from Childress. After two lead changes and a tie, the Deacs used a 6-0 run off free throws from Moore and Crawford and a 3-pointer from Wilbekin to take their largest lead of the half at 25-20. The Panthers charged back, hitting two late triples to take a 28-27 lead into halftime.
Moore had nine points in the first half after going 4-for-6 from the field to go along with six rebounds.
The Demon Deacons opened the second frame on a 7-0 run to take a 34-28 lead and force Pitt into a timeout. The Deacs' defense clamped down on the Panthers, holding them without a basket for almost six minutes to start the second half. However, back-to-back 3-pointers from the Pitt tied the game at 34-all with under 14 minutes to play. The Panthers pulled within one point on three separate occasions, but the Deacons were able to withstand the attempts at a rally en route to the 63-57 victory.
Moore recorded three blocks, moving him into 12th all-time for blocks in a season with 54. He surpasses John Collins, Ty Walker and Carson Desrosiers for sole possession of the number 12 spot.
The Demon Deacons won the rebounding margin, pulling down 38 rebounds to Pitt's 30. The Deacs also committed just five turnovers to the Panthers' eight.
Up next, the Demon Deacons will play at the LJVM Coliseum for the final time in the 2017-18 season as they host Notre Dame on Feb. 24. Tip is set for 3 p.m. on ACC Network affiliates. The game will be Senior Day for Mitchell Wilbekin, Terrence Thompson, Troy Rike, Britton Anderson and Keyshawn Woods, all of whom will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
