Al-Farouq Aminu Named ACC Rookie of the Week

Feb. 2, 2009

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest freshman forward Al-Farouq Aminu was named the ACC Rookie of the Week after posting back-to-back double-doubles in the Demon Deacons' two games last week.

Aminu averaged 16.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game to lead Wake Forest to a 1-1 record last week, including a defeat of No. 1-ranked Duke on Wednesday.

In Wake Forest's 70-68 defeat of Duke, Aminu scored a team-high 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. He also had two assists, two blocks and a steal against the Blue Devils.

In the Deacons' 76-74 loss at Georgia Tech on Saturday, Aminu posted another double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, both of which led the team. He shot 8-for-15 from the floor and tallied a season-best five steals.

Aminu receives ACC Rookie of the Week honors for the fourth time this season after winning the award previously on Dec. 1, Jan. 5, and Jan. 19.

On the season, Aminu is leading the team with 8.8 rebounds per game and is scoring 13.0 points per game. His eight double-doubles are the most by an ACC freshman and are second-most among all conference players.

Aminu, Jeff Teague (four in 2007-08) and Chris Paul (five in 2003-04) are the only Deacons in the past 10 seasons to win multiple ACC Rookie of the Week awards. Aminu is one weekly award shy of reaching the school's rookie record of five, which is shared by Paul and Rodney Rogers (1990-91).

Wake Forest is 17-2 overall and 4-2 in ACC play this season. The Deacons are ranked No. 6 in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 7 in the current AP Poll. Wake returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Miami.
