WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest seniors Chas McFarland and Ishmael Smith have been invited to compete in the annual Portsmouth Invitational, which allows the top 64 seniors in college basketball to showcase their talents in front of over 200 NBA and international scouts.
This year's event, which is the 58th annual, will take place on April 7-10 at Churchland High School in Portsmouth, Virginia.
The participating players are grouped into eight teams of eight. The teams then play a double-elimination tournament over the four days.
McFarland is on the Norfolk Sports Club team, which opens the tournament at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Smith is on the Sales Systems Ltd. team, which begins play at 9 p.m. on Thursday. Smith's team also includes Maryland's Landon Milbourne and Georgia Tech's Zachery Peacock.
Smith and McFarland are two of seven ACC players set to compete in the event. Smith is the only 2010 All-ACC player invited to the event.
Smith averaged 13.2 points, 6.0 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals this past season. A second team All-ACC pick, Smith ranks seventh nationally in assists. The Concord, N.C. native finished his career as the only player in school history with 1,000 points and 600 assists.
