WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest basketball coach Dino Gaudio on Thursday announced the addition of Dave Wojcik as an assistant coach. Wojcik has spent the last four years at the University of Tulsa, working on the staff of his older brother, Doug Wojcik. Dave spent three seasons as an assistant coach before being promoted to associate head coach prior to the 2008-09 season. "Dave brings an added dimension to our coaching staff with his on-floor coaching experience and with his reputation as one of America's best recruiters," said Gaudio. "He is a rising star in this business. My relationship with Dave covers 25 years. With the values we espouse at Wake forest and the high standards we set for our student-athletes, Dave is a perfect fit for our University and our basketball program." Wojcik joins Rusty LaRue as new additions to the Deacon coaching staff for the 2009-10 season. The two positions opened up when former assistant coach Pat Kelsey left to become the associate head coach at Xavier and when assistant coordinator of basketball operations Ryan Reynolds went to Arizona to join the staff of longtime mentor Sean Miller. Mike Muse, who enters his fourth season on the Wake Forest sideline, has also been named to a newly-created position as Director of Basketball Operations/Player Development. Wojcik comes to Winston-Salem to reunite with Gaudio, whom he played for in his prep days at Wheeling Central Catholic (W.Va.) High School and then coached under at Loyola (Md.) College. Wojcik not only has deep-rooted ties to Gaudio but also to former Demon Deacon head coach Skip Prosser. He won a West Virginia state title under Gaudio in 1987 and then went on to play at Loyola from 1988-91.
Wojcik returned to his alma mater in 1993-94 as an assistant under Prosser, helping the Greyhounds win the MAAC title and advance to the school's only NCAA Tournament appearance. He then followed Prosser to Xavier and spent three seasons (1995-97) as an assistant coach with the Musketeers. During his time in Cincinnati, in which he coached alongside current Wake Forest associate head coach Jeff Battle, Wojcik helped Xavier reach two NCAA Tournaments and win 59 games. Wojcik then went back to Loyola to join Gaudio's new staff in 1997-98. He spent three seasons as Gaudio's top assistant at Loyola before returning to his original roots in Wheeling, West Virginia. Wojcik returned to his hometown to become the athletic director at Wheeling Central Catholic in 2000-01. He took over as head boy's basketball coach the following season and coached the team to back-to-back state championships in 2001-02 and 2002-03. Wojcik made the move back to the collegiate ranks in 2003-04, joining Don DeVoe's staff at the U.S. Naval Academy. After spending one season at Navy, Wojcik moved to the University of Dayton to work under Brian Gregory in 2004-05. The following year he joined his brother Doug, who had been named the head coach at Tulsa prior to the 2005-06 campaign. In four years at Tulsa, Wojcik helped the Golden Hurricane post an overall record of 81-53 (.604). Tulsa posted three-straight 20-win seasons, won 25 games in each of his last two years there and advanced to consecutive Conference USA Tournament title games in 2008 and 2009. Tulsa also won the inaugural College Basketball Invitational in 2008 and advanced to the NIT second round in 2009. Wojcik began his coaching career in 1991-92 under Lefty Driesell at James Madison. In his only season there, JMU posted a 21-11 record, won the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title and played in the NIT. He then spent one season (1992-93) as an assistant coach at West Liberty State College, before joining Prosser at Loyola the following year. As a prep athlete, Wojcik was a McDonald's Honorable Mention High School All-America selection while playing point guard for Wheeling Central Catholic. He led the Maroon Knights to three consecutive appearances in the West Virginia AA State Championship game, winning the state title in 1987. Wojcik played collegiately at Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland, and is the only player in school history to record a triple-double. He scored 14 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and dished out 11 assists against St. Francis on Feb. 4, 1989. Wojcik, 39, earned his bachelor's degree in education from Loyola College in 1991. He and his wife, Heather, have one son, Jake. |
