Wake Forest Runs Past Army 25-11
Sept. 21, 2013
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Wake Forest turned the tables on Army, enjoying their best running output of the season in a 25-11 victory in West Point on Saturday.
The win evens the Deacons' record at 2-2 on the year while Army drops to 1-3.
Senior running back Josh Harris likes running against the Black Knights. He followed-up last season's 129-yard, two touchdown game with another solid effort on Saturday. The Duncanville, Texas native finished with 96 yards on 19 carries and a pair of touchdown runs. All three totals were season-highs.
Fellow senior Tanner Price also had his best day on the ground, finishing with a career-high 66 yards on 11 carries. He also was 6-of-17 through the air for 132 yards and one touchdown. He is now tied for second in school history with 44 career touchdown passes.
The Demon Deacon defense, which has been the team's best unit this season, held Army to more than 40 yards under their season average for rushing yards. Senior nose guard Nikita Whitlock was the leader up front, making a career-high 14 tackles, including a career-high tying three tackles for loss. Mike Olson made double-digit tackles for the second-straight week and redshirt-freshman Hunter Williams finished with a career-high eight tackles and the first two fumble recoveries of his career.
Senior flanker Michael Campanaro made four catches for 91 yards which included a 66-yard touchdown reception. Campanaro now has 187 catches in his career, which is the second-most for a Demon Deacon. He trails Desmond Clark by 29 catches for the most in school history.
For Army, Terry Baggett finished with a game-high 125 yards on 16 carries. Xavier Moss made eight catches for 61 yards.
Army opened the scoring by stuffing a Harris run in the endzone with 3:14 left in the first quarter. The Deacons then took Army's first fumble after the ensuing free kick down to the seven yard line but Hedlund's 25-yard field goal hits the left upright.
The Demon Deacons cashed in on Army's second fumble however as Hedlund was perfect from 35 yards, giving Wake Forest its first lead at 3-2 with 9:39 to play until halftime.
After an Army punt, Wake Forest went back down the field but Price's pass into the endzone was intercepted by Army's Josh Jenkins, ending the threat. But on the Deacs' very next drive, Price hit Campanaro on a crossing route at midfield and the senior from Clarksville, Md., raced past the Black Knight secondary for a 66-yard score. That was the longest touchdown reception of Campanaro's career and it made the score 10-2 in favor of the Deacs with 2:01 to play until the half.
Baggett then broke a 51-yard run on the Black Knight's first play after the touchdown which would setup a Daniel Grochowski 39-yard field goal. The kick was good and the teams headed into the break with the Deacs leading 10-5.
The Deacons' opening drive of the second half was doomed by a block in the back and Alexander Kinal's punt got caught in the wind, giving Army the ball at the Wake Forest 36 yard line. The defense held again and only allowed a 32-yard field goal by Grochowski. He then would add another 32-yard field goal later in the quarter to give the Black Knights an 11-10 lead.
But the Deacons would answer. A career-long 39-yard reception by tight end Spencer Bishop and a 10-yard run by Dominique Gibson setup Harris for a 15-yard touchdown run. That was Harris' longest rush of the season and it capped a five-play, 75-yard drive. Price then hit Jonathan Williams in the back of the endzone for the two-point conversion, giving the Deacons an 18-11 lead with 1:38 left in the third quarter.
The defense forced yet another punt and Harris took over on the next drive. He ran seven times for 58 yards on the drive and finished-it with a six-yard TD plunge. That was the fourth multi-touchdown game of his career and it provided the final margin of 25-11.
Wake Forest will get back into ACC action next Saturday as it head to No. 3 Clemson. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
