DURHAM, N.C. - Tarence Williams ran for two touchdowns as Wake Forest scored 28 straight points in the first half, then fended off a Duke rally for a 42-35 victory Saturday.

Duke scored 28 points in the third quarter, and Dee Bryant tied it at 35 on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 11:30 left in the game.

Wake Forest (3-3, 1-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) answered with a 10-play, 67-yard drive capped by Fred Staton's 5-yard plunge for the winning score with 7:05 to play.

The Deacons never let Duke (0-6, 0-4) past midfield in the final seven minutes and snapped their three-game losing streak. Duke has lost 18 straight, 13 in ACC play.

Wake Forest's Kellen Brantley killed Duke's last hope with an interception and return to the Duke 48 with 1:18 to play.

The Demon Deacons scored on three of their first four possessions and grabbed a 21-0 lead in the first quarter.

James MacPherson's 35-yard pass to John Stone on the Deacons' fifth play from scrimmage opened the scoring.

Staton capped a 10-play drive with a 2-yard touchdown run on Wake Forest's next series. Tarence Williams added scoring runs of 3 and 2 yards to give the Deacons a 28-0 lead with 8:01 left in the second quarter.

Stone added another touchdown on a 7-yard end-around with 7:04 left in the third quarter for a 35-7 lead.

Bryant started Duke's rally with his 1-yard run and added a touchdown pass of 7 yards to Ben Erdeljac.

Anthony Roberts' 20-yard interception return for a touchdown trimmed it to 35-21.

Chris Douglas' 11-yard run brought Duke to 35-28 with 53 seconds left in the third quarter

 

 

Duke's last win came Nov. 13, 1999, when it beat Wake Forest 48-35.
