2016 MILITARY BOWL - WAKE FOREST 34, TEMPLE 26

Postgame Quotes

Wake Forest Head Coach Dave ClawsonOpening statement...
"Congratulations to Temple. They had a great season, won 10 games, won a championship, and we knew they would come back. We jumped out to a big lead and those guys came back and made it a fight to the very end. I am sure proud of our football team. It's not just a one-season deal. It's a three-year deal. To get Wake Forest back to a bowl, to win a bowl championship, to finish with a winning season for the first time since 2008, and to finish the year by beating a ranked opponent - it's a great feeling."

On the team's celebration after the game...
"It was really neat to watch that scene at the end, and that's what makes college football special. There are all of these different bowls, and some people try to deemphasize it with the College Football Playoff. Try telling our players that that bowl game wasn't meaningful. That will be a memory those guys carry forever."

On play in the red zone...
"Our defense did a great job in the red zone. We've played very good red zone defense all year, and that was really the difference in the game today. We won the turnover battle, we scored touchdowns in the red zone - that was a nice change - and our defense continued to play great red zone defense. Temple's field goals and our touchdowns ere the difference in the ball game."

On the success of the first-half offense...
"We were healthy and we could run the playbook. It makes a difference. That's the way the offense looked in the spring. It's the way it looked in fall camp. The offensive line played well. A lot of those quick passes became good gainers for us and we ran the ball."

On John Armstrong's 80-yard kickoff return in the closing minutes...
"We weren't moving the ball very well. Just to get points and make it an eight-point lead. And again, we were playing great red zone defense. So at that point, they would have to drive the field in under two minutes with no timeouts and convert a two-point conversion just to get it to overtime. With our defense, that's usually a good situation for us. So the run-back was huge. The field goal to make it an eight point game was huge. And then our defense getting the tackle-for-loss on second-and-one was huge."

Senior Rover Thomas Brown

On the team's winning season...
"It feels amazing. We have worked so hard these last three years for Coach Clawson. I'm trying to fight back tears right now. It's such a great feeling, I don't even know how to describe it.Me and the rest of the senior class have been grinding [under coach Clawson] since January 2014 to get to this point. Now we just hope that this team rises up and keeps going once we depart."

On Temple's second-half adjustments...
"We knew they were going to come out throwing. They got some big plays, but we just kept fighting. They would get down to the red zone, and we held them to field goals, field goals, field goals. That's what helped us maintain the lead and win the game."
