Jim Grobe With The Loss
Jim Grobe finishes his 11th season at Wake Forest with a 68-67 overall record.
Grobe is 101-100-1 for his 17-year career.
Valuing The Football
Wake Forest did not commit a turnover in the game and set a school-record for fewest turnovers in a season with 12 (8 INTs and 4 fumbles).
The previous record of 13 was set in 2004.
Pendergrass On The Move
Playing in his final collegiate game, senior running back Brandon Pendergrass finished with 73 yards on 24 carries.
He scored his 17th career rushing touchdown and his 18th overall on a 14-yard scamper in the first quarter.
The Deacs are now 10-6 when he reaches the endzone.
Keeping It On The "Lowe" Down
Sophomore Duran Lowe recorded his first career interception at the end of the first half.
He intercepted Chris Relf in the endzone with two seconds remaining in the half to end the MSU scoring threat.
Tommy Bo With A TD Plunge
Junior fullback Tommy Bohanon recorded his second-career touchdown run on the opening drive of the second half.
Bohanon plunged in from one-yard out.
That was his second rushing touchdown of the season and the fourth TD of his career.
Campanaro With A Career Night
Sophomore wide receiver Michael Campanaro recorded a career-high 10 receptions for a career-high 128 yards.
His previous career-highs were nine catches for 93 yards.
Campanaro finished the season with 833 receiving yards which was tied for 10th in school-history.
First Career Pitch And Catch
Sophomore punter Alex Wulfeck completed his first career pass to senior defensive back Josh Bush on a fake punt in the second quarter.
That was also the first career reception for Bush.
The play went for one yard and was converted for a first down.
Tanner Price Continues To Set Records
Sophomore quarterback Tanner Price just about every true-freshman passing record last season and he continued that trend this season.
With 214 yards on 24 of 46 passing tonight, Price now has 4,366 yards in his career which is a post-sophomore year record. He broke Riley Skinner's old mark of 4,255 yards.
He did throw an interception in the game which extended his streak to 173 pass attempts without an interception. That breaks the previous school-record of 143 which James MacPherson set in 2002.
Price finished the season with 3,017 passing yards and 20 touchdown passes.
Givens Caps Record-Setting Season
Junior Chris Givens had one of the best seasons in school history for a wide receiver.
He finished the season with a school-record 1,330 receiving yards on 83 receptions. Givens also had nine touchdown receptions.
For his career, Givens has 163 receptions which is fourth all-time in school history. He has a total of 2,473 career receptions yards which is third all-time and his 21 career TD receptions is tied for third all-time.
He had seven 100-yard receiving games this season which is one shy of the school-record.
Givens has now caught at least one pass in each of the last 28 games he has played in.
What a Combo
Wake Forest receivers Chris Givens and Michael Campanaro teamed to be the most productive receiving tandem in school history this season. The duo set a single-season record for combined receptions with 156. Givens finished with 83 grabs while Campanaro had 73.
They also became only the second Wake tandem to each hit 800 receiving yards in the same season. Givens finished with a school-record 1,330 yards and Campanaro notched 833 yards.
They join Desmond Clark (866) and Jammie Deese (826) who each had over 800 yards receiving in 1998.
Noel With Second Pick
Redshirt freshman cornerback Merrill Noel intercepted his second pass of the season on Mississippi State's first drive of the second half.
Noel now has 21 passes defended on the season, including 19 pass breakups.
Wulfeck Getting A Workout
Sophomore punter Alex Wulfeck recorded a career-high eight punts on the night for a career-high 322 yards.
He averaged 40.3 yards per punt with a long of 49.
Cyhl Quarles
Senior Cyhl Quarles had five tackles on the night giving him a team-high 101 for the season.
He is the first Deacon with 100 or more tackles in a season since Aaron Curry had 105 in 2008.
Miscellaneous
Wake won the toss and elected to defer to the second half.
That was the first time all season that Wake Forest did not receive the ball first.
Wake scored first in 10 of 13 games this season.
Junior place kicker Jimmy Newman tied his season-long with a 46-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. He also kicked a 46-yard field goal against Notre Dame on Nov. 5.
The Demon Deacons are now 29-33 (62 games) in games decided by seven points or less under head coach Jim Grobe.
Mississippi State running back Vick Ballard's 72-yard TD run in the fourth quarter was the longest run Wake Forest has allowed an opponent in a bowl game. Ballard also had a 60-yard TD run in the first quarter, which was the previous longest run by an opponent.
