March 21, 2013
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest football coach Jim Grobe today announced the hiring of Warren Belin, a 1990 Wake Forest graduate, to coach outside linebackers. Belin, a 20-year coaching veteran, was most recently with the Carolina Panthers.
Belin, was a three-year starter at linebacker and four-year letterman for the Demon Deacons from 1987-90. The veteran coach comes back to Wake Forest after two years in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers and a combined nine years in the Southeastern Conference at Georgia and Vanderbilt.
Following the departure of secondary coach Tim Duffie to Oklahoma State, Grobe shifted outside linebacker coach Derrick Jackson to the secondary. Jackson was a four-year starter at safety while playing at Duke.
In two seasons with the Panthers, Belin tutored a pair of solid linebackers. James Anderson set a team-record with 174 tackles in 2011 and then Luke Kuechly finished with 164 tackles and was named the Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2012.
Working with the inside linebackers in his only season at Georgia in 2010, Belin mentored linebacker Akeem Dent, who led the team and ranked second in the Southeastern Conference with 126 tackles. Dent, an All-SEC second-team choice, was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Additionally, Belin handled the Bulldogs' kickoff coverage unit, which ranked first in the conference.
Before moving to Georgia, Belin spent eight seasons as linebackers coach at Vanderbilt from 2002-09. In addition, he served as the team's recruiting coordinator during his last two years and special teams coordinator from 2006-07. While with the Commodores, Belin produced several future NFL player as well as numerous All-SEC selections, including Hunter Hillenmeyer, Jonathan Goff and Marcus Buggs.
From 1997-2001, Belin coached linebackers at Southern Methodist. In each of Belin's five seasons with the Mustangs, at least one member of his linebacking corps captured All-Western Athletic Conference recognition. He also tutored linebackers at Cornell in 1991 and 1993-94 and at East Tennessee State in 1992 prior to overseeing the defensive line at William & Mary in 1995 and linebackers in 1996.
Belin and his wife Yolanda have three daughters, Camryn and twins Morgan and MacKenzi.
