Demon Deacons Hold Second Spring Scrimmage

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -Redshirt freshman Christian Beal ran for 70 yards and two touchdowns while three different quarterbacks threw touchdown passes for Wake Forest on Thursday afternoon. The Demon Deacons’ held their second scrimmage of the spring at the Doc Martin Football Practice Complex in the beautiful 80-degree weather.

Beal had 11 carries and a long rush of 38 yards while averaging 6.4 yards per carry. He scored on runs of five and six yards, notching two of the six touchdowns that the Wake Forest tallied.

Quarterback Jamie Newman tossed a 51-yard scoring pass to Steven Claude, freshman Sam Hartman hit Alex Bachman with a 48-yard score and Kendall Hinton threw a four-yard pass to tight end Brandon Chapman. Hinton completed 12 of 18 passes for 113 yards while Newman was seven-of-15 for 109 yards. Hartman finished the controlled scrimmage by completing six of nine attempts for 78 yards. Matthew Considine went 1-for-2 passing for 25 yards and Tayvon Bowers attempted just one pass.

Redshirt freshman Waydale Jones had five catches for 57 yards while Chapman finished with five receptions for 26 yards. Redshirt sophomore Greg Dortch had four catches for 27 yards. Claude finished with a game-high 68 yards receiving on three catches.

 

 

Following up Beal in rushing was Tyler Bell with 46 yards on seven carries. Hinton had 11 carries for 34 yards and scored on a two-yard run. Matt Colburn II picked up 31 yards on 11 carries.

Freshman Nick Sciba connected on a 29-yard field goal and missed from 38. Zach Murphy converted his lone field goal attempt from 25 yards.

Defensively, the Deacon were led by linebacker Justin Strnad with eight tackles. DJ Taylor had seven stops and tackle Sulaiman Kamara made six tackles. Defensive end Carlos Basham, Jr. had five tackles and a pair of sacks. Zeek Rodney and Mike Allen also contributed sacks.

Converted wide receiver Chuck Wade, Jr. picked off a pass in the end zone and returned it 20 yards.

Wake Forest’s annual Spring Game is set for Saturday, April 7 at 3 pm at BB&T Field.
